An important element of the free market which is competition forces companies to grow. There is a necessity of expansion.
There are various ways that a company can grow.
One of them is an internal growth by staying private and increasing its sales, number of employees etc.
Another way that a company can grow is an IPO – Initial Public Offering. The company moves from being a small, family-owned firm to being a large, listed corporation.
And still another way of expansion is trade sale to a much larger company in the same sector. The original small company is absorbed and its name disappears.
